ARTIFACTS OF WHAT?
The significance of contemporary art movements must be understood in the context of the historical practices and cultural heritages on which they build, many extending well into ancient times. But, for multiracial people, situating ourselves in any one artistic tradition can require denying some aspects of our identities, while overemphasizing others. Artifacts of What? is an exercise in "speculative archaeology"—a world-building project which applies the aesthetics of unearthed artifacts to imagery drawn from diverse cultural traditions, rendered in a blend of highly contemporary and ancient media. In so doing, this series attempts to retroactively construct an artifactual history for multiracial people, so we may situate our artistic practices in a historical past—albeit synthetic—and thereby project ourselves and our work into the future.
